(RNN/CNN) – A military jury sentenced Nidal Hasan to death Wednesday following his conviction for the fatal shootings at Fort Hood.

An execution date has not been set, and it could be years or decades before it is carried out. The sentence will automatically be appealed.

The jury was composed of the same 13 members - all of whom are Hasan's rank or higher -  who found the accused guilty on 13 counts of premeditated murder and multiple, lesser charges. The decision in favor of execution was unanimous.

Due in part to the lengthy appeals process, no member of the U.S. Armed Forces has been executed since 1961. Hasan will join five others on military death row in Fort Leavenworth, KS.

During the trial, Hasan admitted to the shooting. He claimed he did it to protect Muslims in Afghanistan and Iraq, although he was not allowed to say that during court proceedings.

Prior to sentencing, the jury heard survivors and family members of victims testify Tuesday.

Hasan was found guilty on all counts last week for the November 2009 shooting at Fort Hood Army Base that killed 13 people and injured 32 others.

Hasan acted as his own attorney during his court martial. He remained mostly silent during his trial and rested his case without calling any witnesses, including himself.

The jury deliberated nearly seven hours before finding him guilty of the massacre.

The decision in the penalty phase is expected Wednesday.
