Police, AZ utility companies warn of bill paying scam

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Chandler police and Arizona utility companies are warning customers of a bill-paying scam making rounds in the Greater Phoenix area.

Chandler police said Thursday that they have investigated two cases involving utility bill scams in the past two days.

Both Salt River Project (SPR) and Arizona Public Service (APS) have had reports of customers being victims of this scam in the past year.

APS said customers have received phone calls from scammers pretending to be APS employees or making a generic reference to the "electric company," "electric utility" and "power company."

APS and SRP both urge customers to never make payments over the phone or internet without first verifying the source.

If there ever is a question about the validity of a person claiming to be a utility company, customers are urged to call the APS Customer Care Center at 602-371-7171 or SRP Business Contact Center at 602-236-8833.

If a person is misrepresenting himself/herself as a utility company employee, customers should immediately call 911.
