Downtown Aiken gearing up for new office community

Lionel Smith Ltd. employee Marne Clark is ready for a new business in downtown Aiken.

But a project called 'The Mill on Park', could bring him more than one.

"Anything that can bring more people into town is beneficial to the whole business district,"Clark said.

Dr. Paul Newsom, USC Aiken Assistant Professor of Finance, said, "There are going to be multiple businesses located in one, single building right downtown."

Dr. Newsom says some businesses will be start ups, but not all of them.

"I think it's important to have something like a business incubator, but this is more than that. What we're going to be doing in Aiken is not only dealing with startup companies, but mature companies that need office space."

Plans to open are set for the beginning of 2014, but Clark says he can already see good things coming for the street.

"With an office environment, it's usually professional people, so hopefully for us it will be an added bonus."

A bonus he and developer's hope will help everyone on the street and in the new offices.
