AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Back in 2002, William Melvin lost a bet to his wife. His punishment: getting a pedicure. Melvin says at first, it felt kind of nice.
"I started to relax, but as soon as I closed my eyes a group of, like, eight ladies; a wedding party came in and I was like, 'Oh my gosh!'" Melvin said.
But Melvin's discomfort and embarrassment sparked an idea to start a male beatification business. And more than a decade later, Melvin and his wife are hosting the grand opening for Avant Williams Male Grooming.
"I think men are not more in tune with getting their nails done, or getting a massage, and they need the same things we do," said Tonisha Melvin.
Avant Williams Male Grooming is a luxurious barber, spa and massage parlor; offering facials, massages, pedicures, manicures and traditional barber shop services exclusively for men…men whose wives say they need a few hours of professional pampering.
"My wife has been after me to get a pedicure forever, so I might get one here," said Mayor Deke Copenhaver.
Mayor Deke Copenhaver says the salon speaks to the growth in the Garden City. Avant Williams Male Grooming is one of the few and Augusta's newest black-owned small business. And Mayor Copenhaver says these kinds of businesses are the backbone of Augusta's community.
"I'm looking for the city to be more cosmopolitan and metropolitan," said Mayor Deke Copenhaver. "I think this men's grooming salon really helps us get there."
Melvin and his wife say several women have entered the parlor, expecting service, leading the Melvins to consider opening an adjacent women's parlor. But for now, this space will remain solely and boy's club.
