Stepmother: Nashua slay suspect a 'sweet kid'

CONCORD, NH (AP) -

The stepmother of a man suspected of killing a Nashua couple nine days before he took his own life says her stepson was a "sweet kid" who fought with drug and alcohol addiction.

Authorities on Thursday said Shawn Burne is the only suspect in the June 17 stabbing deaths of 83-year-old William and 78-year-old Eleanor Grant.

Paula Burne, of Tucson, Ariz., tells The Associated Press that she couldn't believe Shawn Burne could kill anybody but that he could have been under the influence of drugs.

Burne was found dead in his apartment on June 26, with a note insisting he didn't kill the Grants.

An autopsy shows Burne killed himself by an "acute intoxication" of several drugs, including venlafaxine, olanzapine and clonazepam, used to treat depression, schizophrenia and anxiety.
