Shooting at Augusta apartment, man rushed to hospital

Posted: Updated:

Neighbors in the Walden West apartment complex were abruptly awoken after hearing gun shots late Tuesday night.

"I was sleeping and I heard the gunshots and they woke me up!" said Jeanne Thomas, she says she moved from Boston to Augusta to get away from the gun violence.

Deputies said Marquell Gilbert, 28, was inside his Walden West apartment when two suspects burst through the door and started firing shots. Deputies said Gilbert was struck once in the abdomen and again in the thigh. He was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery early this morning.

Neighbors said the area is usually quiet, but now many of them, some with young children, want to move.

"That's ridiculous, I mean, it's been quiet around here since I've been living here, and it's sad to think that this shooting is going to start going on in this nice neighborhood."

We spoke with neighbors who said they know Gilbert's family. They say the surgery went well, and he's going to be fine.

Now, investigators are trying to piece together information from the victim and any other witnesses who may have been around.

The victim of the Walden West apartment shooting has been identified as Marquell Gilbert, 28, according to a press release from Sgt. Monica Belser.

Belser said Gilbert underwent surgery this morning at Georgia Regents Medical Center. She was not able to release an update on his condition at this time.
