Suspected school gunman in the DeKalb County Jail

DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

CBS Atlanta News was there as DeKalb County police drove from their headquarters in Tucker to the DeKalb County Jail with the 20-year-old suspected school gunman in the backseat.

Michael Brandon Hill was questioned at headquarters for several hours Tuesday night before taking the ride.

Also late into Tuesday evening, DeKalb police and ATF agents searched a house on E. Lilac Lane in Decatur.

The woman living there said her name is Alex, and that the suspected school gunman Michael Brandon Hill had been living there with her and her boyfriend for the past few weeks.

She met him through her church, and said that he had fallen on hard times.

The home is a block away from Ronald E. McNair Discovery Academy, where police said Hill exchanged gunfire with officers early Tuesday afternoon.

Before searching the suspect's residence, officers went door-to-door and evacuated all of the homes along E. Lilac Lane.

Carmela Billups' aunt was evacuated from her home.

"They said it was for her safety, just to bring her across the street," said Billups. "As long as you know they're doing their job, it makes me feel good. So that's pretty much as long as I know my mother and aunt are all OK, that's all that matters."

Police took the safety precaution after an explosive was found at the school.

CBS Atlanta News cameras were at the school as officers recovered what appeared to be two rifles.

DeKalb County police said that Hill faces numerous charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer, terrorist threats and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
