AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Dozens of friends and family members of Jamarcus Bell, 27, met at Butler High School Friday night to tearfully celebrate his life with a vigil.

Bell went missing in the Gulf of Mexico last week near the Grand Panama Beach Resort.

Panama City Beach Police say he was swept into the ocean after he swam out to help friends in distress; he didn't resurface.

His friends say he died a hero.

"He heard my cries out to him to help, because I started to struggle. He kept his promise to always be there for us and that's what he did," said the man Bell saved.

His friends say they lost a true friend, "Jamarcus just had such a kind spirit, whenever he was around, he just puts out a positive spirit, he was always preaching to us, always telling us you got to go to church."

His funeral was Saturday at 11 a.m. at Bible Way Church on Grand Boulevard in Augusta.
