New exhibition center opens in Columbia Co.

Columbia County Officials showed off the county's newest addition today, the exhibition center.

"We're just glad to have another facility to Columbia County's inventory," said Barry Smith, Columbia County's director of community and leisure services. "It's a nice facility to accommodate citizens and visitors."

The 7.3 million dollar investment stretches 47,000 square feet in the Gateway Shopping Center near Grovetown.

"It's the gateway to Columbia County - off of I-20, perfectly situated," Smith said.

The convention center will be able to accommodate large scale events such as car shows and smaller events like meetings, in their breakout rooms.

"Savannah Rapids has always been a popular rental facility in the area," said Sandy Bonner, manager of rental facilities in Columbia County. "We've got a huge following. We've got a lot of groups outgrowing us."

Many vendors in the community attended today's opening to support.

"We're certainly hoping that it will increase staffing opportunities for us at Career Personnel but more important for individuals that live out in this area to be able to get additional jobs and to work with Columbia County for the different events they're going to be having here," said Carolyn Durham, the director of client staffing at Career Personnel.

Thursday is the first of four days for the grand opening of the exhibition center.
