Firefighters find 'miracle' dog that survived house fire

NORTH AUGUSTA, SC (WFXG) -

Firefighters drenched a burning home in North Augusta until water poured down the front stairs. The wet mess of debris created quite a contrast to the towering flames that tore apart the home.

"It was engulfed in flames and there was smoke everywhere. The windows were blown out, fire was pouring out of the chimney," said Troy Hebbard who lived in the home on Savannah Pointe.

When he came home Wednesday afternoon he was greeted by flames swallowing his house.

North Augusta Public Safety officials don't know what caused the fire but they think it started in the back of the house.

Hebbard said he worried the blaze would steal his brother's life, "I was kind of scared knowing that I might not see my little brother anymore."

His brother Ryan Hebbard, 16, rushed into the burning house to save their two dogs but didn't make it far.

"I had to come back out I couldn't breathe anymore," he said.

Ginger, one of the dogs they had for nine years, escaped. But when minutes stretched into hours and Bear, their 9 month old Rottweiler, Golden Retriever mix didn't appear emotions started spilling over.

But then something extraordinary happened. Bear was found hiding in a closet in the basement, the only part of the house not touched by the fire, which firefighters say is a miracle.

Firefighters say the dog should be taken to a veterinarian because it may have inhaled large amounts of smoke.
