Boy finds diamond, local jeweler reaches out to help

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

When 12 year-old Michael Detlaff found a diamond in the rough in Arkansas, that was just the beginning of the story.

"This is not a small stone. This is a 5 carat plus stone. It's very rare. It's a very big stone and he's very lucky," Van Diamond owner Philip Vanemmenis said.

Detlaff and his parents agreed and sent the diamond to be checked out by a jeweler in Arizona,
who sent it to Van Diamond.

Tertius Vanemmenis, Van Diamond Co-Owner, said, "When you process a rough diamond, it's starting from the beginning all the way to the end."

But Van Diamond isn't just hoping to process his order. They aren't even planning on charging him.

"We would like him to be part of it. If he can come over and spend a couple of days, he can put the diamond on the wheel himself," Philip said.

 
"We're going to try to get in touch with the boy and if he wants us to proceed with cutting it, we'll do it for free," Tertius said.

When asked why they're going above and beyond for Michael, they said the diamond isn't the only rare part of the story.

Philip said, "Why not? This is a kid that's so passionate about what he found, why not help him? How many chances are there to pick up a rock diamond, get it cut and be part of it? It's just unheard of."

Unheard of and rare, but a great find.
