Back-to-school shopping down nationwide, driving local sales

EVANS, GA (WFXG) -

"Well, right now we've got several great deals on our footwear and apparel," said Store Director Jeremy Goldman. "We've got over 200 styles of kids' footwear under $40."

Academy Sports in Evans is dropping prices and bringing in inventory as the new school year rapidly approaches.

"Our sales kind of speak for themselves," said Goldman. "We pride ourselves on having low prices and our customers reward us for it."

The sporting goods and apparel store is bucking the trend when it comes to revenue and traffic. Retail officials say the back-to-school shopping season had a sluggish start thanks to a 2% increase in federal payroll taxes and furloughs impacting federal installations, like Fort Gordon. Stores have responded by slashing price tags.

"We've had lots of foot traffic in the store," explained Goldman. "A lot of great deals in the store, driving business. It's been a good back to school season for us."

And with Saturday expected to be their busiest day of the season, Goldman is deploying his staff in full force.

"We are extremely well staffed in all areas," said Goldman. "And have plenty of people to help our shoppers with a convenient experience."
