CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) -

A new program is aimed at improving the safety of rental housing for college students.

The new Cincinnati Safe Student Housing website lists apartment and rental homes that have passed a safety inspection by the Cincinnati Fire Department.

The program was launched in the memory of several Cincinnati college students who lost their lives in off-campus fires.

Landlords can volunteer to have their property inspected by Cincinnati Fire Department personnel, free of charge, to see if it meets fire code standards and then be added to the Safe Housing List. The list will be linked on local university websites.

More than 245 units have been inspected since the beginning of July.

Two city council members have also proposed an ordinance that would require photoelectric smoke detectors inside all Cincinnati rental properties.

Visit www.cincinnatisafestudenthousing.com for tenant/landlord inspection checklists, fire safety tips downloadable fliers and more.
