Opening statement to be made at ex-officer's murder trial

PHOENIX (AP) -

Opening statements are scheduled Wednesday in the trial of a former Phoenix police officer charged in the fatal shootings of an unarmed man and his dog during a domestic dispute call.

Richard Chrisman faces second-degree murder, aggravated assault and animal cruelty charges in the October 2010 death of 29-year-old Daniel Rodriguez at his south Phoenix trailer.

The officer's partner told investigators there was no threat against either him or Chrisman during the call.

Chrisman maintains the shooting was justified because Rodriguez had reached for the officer's gun during a tussle that preceded the shooting.

Chrisman has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The nine-year police veteran was fired about five months after Rodriguez's death.
