Thursday, Baystate Medical Center, in Springfield, celebrated a successful year of performing a cutting-edge procedure known as transcatheter aortic valve replacement surgery, or TAVR.
This valve replacement procedure is less invasive than traditional open heart surgery, allowing patients to recover much faster. TAVR offers another option for people who are not able to undergo open heart surgery, because of medical complications.
Baystate was the only hospital in western Massachusetts to offer the procedure.
Jean-Louis Sevigny went through the procedure about 9 months ago. He said he already had a triple bypass surgery. That and other complications put him at risk for another open heart procedure. He said he felt lucky he was able to have the valve replacement surgery. Sevigny also said he felt great, and had high praise for the medical team at Baystate. His wife Carol said, the surgery gave her husband a new lease on life.
