Schools scored for meeting student's needs

Posted: Updated:

The Aiken County school system received a C for a letter grade from the state Education Department.

They received the average score for the Elementary and Secondary Education Act waiver, which measures how schools address the needs of students.

Aiken County was graded with a B last year but school leaders say the drop in letter grade isn't as bad as it may look.

"We're never pleased with our ratings. The whole idea is to use to use the information there and improve our program," said Randy Stowe, the Director of Administrative Services.

He says they're reviewing the report now to outline how to help their students meet state standards.

He says the lower score doesn't mean they aren't on par.

Fox54's Mark Barber asked, "This grading scale measures if student's needs are being met, after receiving a C, do you think they are?" Stowe said, "Today Dr. Mick Zais, the Superintendent of Education, stated any school or school district with an A, B or C was meeting the state standard."

He says their letter grade isn't higher because the state pushes schools to meet a difficult goal: 100% of their students exceeding state standards.

"There's always some frustration about the ultimate goal of the 2014 goal of the no child left behind legislation," he said.

Aiken County along with half of South Carolina schools dropped a letter grade for the ESEA waiver rating.
