2 hurt after plane crashes into Columbus, IN house

COLUMBUS, IN (WAVE) – Two men are being treated at an Indianapolis hospital after the small plane they were flying crashed into a house.

Lt. Matt Myers of the Columbus Police Department tells WAVE 3 News the plane had just taken off from Columbus Municipal Airport, located about two miles northeast, just after 9:30 a.m.

The plane hit the rear of a house in the 2200 block of Broadmoor Drive. That home suffered heavy fire damage, but a resident inside was in another part of the house and able to get out on her own. Officials say some other houses nearly sustained minor damage.

Myers said one of the men on the plane was initially taken to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment before being flown to Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis. The second man was taken by ground ambulance to Wishard.

Myers said the plane was a single engine aircraft that was privately owned in Columbus. Some witnesses told NBC Indianapolis affiliate WTHR-TV that they heard the plane sputtering.

A command post has been set up at Grace Lutheran Church at 3201 Central Ave. Columbus police and federal Aviation Administration officials will handle the investigation.
