Possible property tax increase in Richmond County

Posted: Updated:
RICHMOND COUNTY (WFXG) -

Richmond County may see a tax increase soon as the school board is proposing to adopt a new millage rate.

It would be a 5.16% on property taxes.

That means for a home with a fair market value of $100,000, approximately $30.52 and for a non-homstead property with a fair market value of $300,000, approximately $104.64.

Board members say the increase is to make up for cuts from the state.

"Unfortunately we are having to ask for a tax increase because we continue to sustain cuts from out state funding source," said Gene Spires, Richmond County Board of Education controller. "Since 2003, the state has actually reduced the amount we are entitled to based on their funding formula."

There will be 3 hearings for those concerned about the increase. All will be held downtown at the county's board of education building.
