Crews scramble to clean up storm damages before school year

AHWATUKEE, AZ (CBS5) -

Tree trunks and branches lay in a pile outside Desert Vista High School. Its outfield wall at the baseball diamond is twisted and large sections were blown over.

At several Kyrene elementary schools, trees were uprooted, windows shattered and classrooms flooded.

The damages will cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to repair.

"We had about a hundred trees that were uprooted, marquees, about a dozen shade structures damaged," Kyrene Schools Chief Financial Officer Jeremy Calles said.

Calles has crews working every day to try to get the damages cleaned up before students go back to school in August, but not everything will be "back to normal."

"We'll be without some of those items such as the shade structures," Calles said.

One of those structures was covering a playground at Kyrene de Los Lagos Elementary when the heavy winds bent its metal poles, collapsing the structure on top of the playground.

Crews hope to have that removed by the start of school, but replacement could take some time.

At Desert Vista High School, a pair of batting cages are mangled after the high winds tossed them like tumbleweed.

"I came home and found all of a huge, giant batting cage in front of my porch," Laura McGinney said.

The batting cage was blown hundreds of yards over a wall, across the street and onto McGinney's home.

As crews worked feverishly throughout the day Monday, the main focus is to have the classrooms ready, but if more storms blow through the Valley, more problems may arise.

"This just throws an extra curve ball," Calles says, "but as we always do, we'll deal with it and we'll have everything perfect and ready for the kids as soon as they come back."
