GED changing test, increasing price in 2014

(FOX19) -

Several local GED test centers are seeing an increase in Ohio residents taking the exam, but changes are coming to the GED in 2014.

The cost and content of the GED will change for the first time in Ohio since 2002.

On Friday, Elsie Thompson took the final section of the GED in hopes of passing.

"Nowadays so many jobs out here are requiring a high school diploma or a GED, and they're really not trying to hire nobody without one of the two," said Thompson.

According to the Ohio Department of Education, the last day to place an application and submit fees for the paper test is August 9, 2013. The last day to take the paper test is December 21. On January 1, 2014 the only option for students is an online test that costs $120, compared to the current fee of $40.

"I think they will probably take it a little more seriously," Donna Wakefield of National College told FOX19's Brett Hoffland on Friday.

Wakefield says the test is currently five sections. Next year it'll be four, and it's supposed to be harder in an effort to match the upcoming Common Core State Standards across Ohio school districts.

"They may not think it's as equivalent as a high school diploma, so maybe it's to give the GED a little more credibility with employees and schools that they've raised the bar," said Wakefield.

If a student has not passed one or more parts of the current exam, beginning January 1, they'll need to take and pass the entire new test to receive their GED. Thompson says she's even spreading the word to family and friends about the new standards.

"Everybody has their strengths and their weaknesses, so I just told them to get it done now before next year because you don't know what you're going to step into," explained Thompson.

When asked where Thompson sees herself in five years: "Oh, I'll be an RN in five years."
