GOODYEAR, AZ (CBS5/AP) -

A former Goodyear police detective has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for child molestation.

Jose Jesus Roman Jr. was sentenced Thursday by a Maricopa County Superior Court commissioner.

Roman was arrested July 1, 2013 on suspicion of having sex with a 12-year-old girl a decade ago. Maricopa County sheriff's deputies apprehended him at Goodyear's main police patrol station.

The victim, who was 22 years old at the time of Roman's arrest, told police he molested and had sex with her at his home in Tonopah and at another home in Glendale from 2003 to 2006.

Roman denied the allegations, and was subjected to a polygraph examination "which resulted in no decision … indicating no truthful or untruthful determination," court records show.

Roman admitted in two recorded conversations with his wife on June 27 the allegations were true and provided details that "only an active participant would know," police said.

Roman is a 19-year veteran of the Goodyear Police Department. He has worked in the Investigations Division of the department since 2006, according to the police department.
