The body of John Champy Sr. has been found in the Edisto River. Investigators discovered the body around 4am Thursday after an overnight search.

Champy, a Williston resident, was reported missing last night after going fishing. His body and the boat he was operating were found approximately 2 miles upriver from the Veterans Road boat landing.

Champy, an avid fisherman, left his home to go fishing yesterday morning around 9:30. When he did not return friends and concerned citizens went to look for him. His vehicle was found at the landing. That is when Williston Rescue and the Department of Natural Resources were called to the scene to begin searching.

The cause of death is under investigation by the Aiken County Coroner's Office and the Department of Natural Resources. An autopsy is scheduled this morning in Newberry, SC. No foul play is suspected at this time.
