NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Metro police say an investigation continues into allegations of a sex crime at Vanderbilt University involving four former members of the football team.

The players, whose identities the school released Monday, were dismissed from the team last month in connection to the case, which allegedly originated in a dorm room on campus.

The university said Brandon Banks, Cory Batey, Jaborian "Tip" McKenzie and Brandon Vandenburg will not be part of the 2013 football team based on a violation of team rules.

No charges have been filed in the investigation.

"Its unfortunate. I knew those guys, and you wouldn't think that something like that could come out of a football team," said former Commodores quarterback Jordan Rodgers.

Rodgers said this investigation is bound to hurt the image of the university.

"Unfortunately, the actions of a few can change the perception of many, and unfortunately that's going to be a tough job for coach [James] Franklin and the staff to get back on that image," he said.

The four players were initially suspended from the team June 28. The following day, the school announced the four were dismissed from the football team and suspended from the school.

Each player has retained an attorney, and attorney Grover Collins has been retained to represent Banks.

"Mr. Banks maintains his innocence to any and all wrongdoing," said a statement released by Collins. "We are fully cooperating with the police in this investigation and have appealed the decision by the University."

Attorney Worrick Robinson represents Corey Batey. He declined comment saying it wouldn't be appropriate to talk right now since the investigation is still pending.

The names were released in advance of Vanderbilt's appearance this week at the SEC Media Days in Birmingham, AL.

"For student athletes at Vanderbilt, it is a privilege, not a right, to be a part of the program," Vanderbilt head coach Franklin said in a prepared statement. "My coaching staff and I make sure every member of our team understands that. We insist on high standards of personal responsibility and integrity, and there are consequences when those standards are not met.

"In dealing with this matter, the Commodores football team will continue to hold itself to the same high standards of responsibility and integrity Vanderbilt demands of all of our students.

"We are cooperating fully with the Nashville Police Department and have pledged not to say or do anything that could interfere with its work or compromise the rights of anyone involved. We have not prejudged anyone's guilt or innocence."
