AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

UPDATE: Poteet Funeral home confirms final funeral arrangements have been made for Army Specialist Hilda Clayton.

Visitation is planned for Friday, July 19 from noon until 8pm at the chapel at Poteet Funeral Home. The visitation is open to the public. The funeral will be held Saturday on base at Fort Gordon.

The family did want to pass along their appreciation to the community for their support during this difficult time.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Despite gloomy skies and passing rain showers, dozens of supporters showed up to welcome home 22-year-old Army Specialist Hilda Clayton.

She was killed in Afghanistan earlier this month when a training exercise in Afghanistan went awry. Clayton was taking photos of the Afghan National Army as part of her job as a combat documentation specialist.

"She was just so proud to serve her country," said Angela Mulkey. "And she was determined. She loved photography. She wanted to be able to capture those moments as she was in the service."

Mulkey was a friend and instructor to Clayton while she was enrolled at Augusta Tech. Mulkey says the army specialist brought a new life to the school.

"Always energetic, always happy, always wanted to have fun," she explained. "She was always the one that kept the class going in a very happy way. She was very dependable."

It wasn't only friends that showed up to welcome the Army Veteran home; the Patriot Riders brought bikers all the way from Savannah and Atlanta to make the ride from Augusta Regional Airport to Poteet Funeral Home.

"These kids are all volunteers," said the ride captain. "They put their life on the line for us. It's only our responsibility to make sure the last remaining thing that happens for them is honorable."

An honorable service for someone they say was lost too soon.
