Drive, Chip and Putt Tees Off

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

It was competition day at the First Tee of Augusta.

"Drive, Chip and Putt is a great competition where children get to test their skills at driving, chipping and putting. They're all hoping to win at this qualifier so they can go to the regionals in Atlanta. If they win there, they get to do a drive, chip and putt at the Augusta National in April," said Jill Brown, Executive director of the First Tee of Augusta.

But Erica Hawes and her girls are relaxed. They aren't in it to win it.

"It'll boost her self confidence. She's kind of shy, so she feels nervous all the time. This will change her life."

Hawes isn't a parent. She's not a golfer, either. Her girls are cousins. 22-year old Hawes takes care of them like they're her own.

"If they are well, I'm good. Whatever they want to do, I let them do it."

Parents out on the course feel the same way.

Brad Borke said, "I think people are competitive, but the sportsmanship here, everyone has good sportsmanship."

Some parents want their kids to take that sportsmanship to the next level.

"College is expensive and for us parents, it gets harder and harder, "James Harrison said, "So this is an avenue for us."
