Activists rally to improve birth outcomes

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

One small group is rallying to make a big difference in Augusta. CSRA Birthing Connections is raising awareness to improve birth outcomes. Friday morning the group held signs on Laney-Walker Blvd spreading facts on the poor maternal morality rate in the area.

The group said women in the East Central HEalth District of Georgia are six times more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth and the first year following birth than the national average.

"I'm used to seeing these kinds of stats for third world countries, not at my front door," said Andrea McPherson, a community activist. "So that's one of the reasons why I had to get out there and do something because this is not acceptable."

The group is advocating for better maternal health care. They're calling on state officials to provide better access to midwives and doulas to help improve maternal outcomes.
