DONEY PARK, AZ (CBS5) -

A 2-year-old girl was tragically hit and killed Monday afternoon in Doney Park, AZ, authorities said.

The Coconino County Sheriff's Office said investigators determined a 59-year-old woman was driving north on Pioneer Valley Road at about 25 miles per hour when she looked to west of Pioneer Valley Road and saw a group of kids playing in a front yard adjacent to the road.

According to the driver, she slowed down to 20 miles per hour, and deputies believe the toddler ran into the street and was hit by the front, passenger side of the car.

The first deputy to respond found the child lying in the roadway unconscious, with severe head trauma.

A retired Summit Fire Department firefighter with medical experience was kneeling over the child and stabilizing her head and neck.

The child was taken to the Flagstaff Medical Center, in very serious condition.

She died a short time later.

CCSO said the investigation is ongoing.
