PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A 34-year-old Phoenix man brandishing two butcher knives was shot and killed by a Phoenix police officer after making a suicide-by-cop threat, investigators said.

Phoenix police Sgt. Tommy Thompson said officers learned Todd Ferguson had been drinking and allegedly threatened to kill his father, at whose house he was staying.

When police arrived at the home in the area of 700 E. Pierce late Saturday afternoon, they said they found Ferguson standing at the door with the two butcher knives raised in a threatening manner.

He told the officer to kill him, Thompson said. The officer gave commands to stop, but Ferguson ignored them and continued to advance toward the officer outside of the apartment, telling him to kill him, Thompson said.

The officer opened fire when Ferguson got within several feet of him, Thompson said. Ferguson died at the scene. The officer was not injured.

The Homicide Unit and the Professional Standards of Phoenix Police Department are investigating the incident. The officer, whose name was not released, will be placed on administrative leave.
