Reaction to delay on Affordable Care Act

Posted: Updated:
TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Instead of 2014, the new deadline for businesses with 50 plus employees to comply with the Affordable Care Act is 2015.

Jeff Vernon works part-time at Scrambler Marie's on Secor Road in west Toledo. With this new one-year delay, he's not sure how his employer will react.

"They may not change the way they do business on that part of it because it's only a year away," said Vernon.

Vernon says now's the time to do something and make the law better.  He suggests examining at the amount of workers.

"You have 50 employees therefore you're a medium to large business.  You're really not.  Let's look at the revenue," said Vernon.

Some of that change could come from politicians.  US Representative Bob Latta from Bowling Green released a statement about the delay.  It reads in part, 'ObamaCare has hindered job creation and growth by generating uncertainty in the marketplace and burdening small businesses and employers with tax increases and costly regulations.'

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell says the Affordable Care Act needs to recognize the impact it will have on society.

"We want to make sure that everybody is taken care of and I want to be clear about that, but there's got to be a way that it's very sensitive to these business people or anybody that's got employees," said Bell.

The Obama administration says the health care reform is already helping people and will provide never before seen access and care.

Vernon says he hopes the 12 month hiatus generates additional ideas.

"That's a year where people can be more vocal about it, say more about it, tweet more, Facebook more, call channel 11 more," Vernon said.
