AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Hundreds of people who went to a gospel music concert at Tabernacle Baptist Church Thursday thought they were going to see some of the biggest names in gospel music.

But none of the headliners showed up and the concert promoter disappeared with thousands of dollars.

"I think it's a complete scam," said Allen West, who was a part of the security team for the concert.

He says there's no doubt in his mind that Sharif King, the concert promoter, used the concert to cheat people of their money.

He says King promised that several well-known gospel artists, such as, James Fortune, Tamela Mann and Vickie Winans would perform.

He says people paid $20 dollars at the door and some paid $40 to meet the artists backstage.

West says after 900 people were inside; King took the money and went with a police escort to pick up Winans from a hotel.

"When they got to the hotel he told the police officers that the main headliner had just landed at the Augusta airport so he was going to go pick him up. That's how he got rid of the police escort and took the money," West, said.

Winans was still in her hotel. She tweeted that she was sitting there dressed to perform and the concert was a "shame" and a "bogus show."

The other headliners didn't show up.

"Did you ever see anything that made you wonder, could this be a scam?" asked Fox54's Mark Barber. West said, "It was so organized no one suspected anything."

According to King's LinkedIn account, he's the General Manager at Dower Records Group in New York City.

Fox54 tried to reach him several times but his voicemail isn't taking any messages and he hasn't responded to texts.

West says he suspects that King made off with $20,000.

According to an incident report, King is accused of stealing a radio worth $100 from a man who was on the security team for the event.

Lt. Calvin Chew says they won't investigate accusations of a scam until people report it.

A Tabernacle Baptist Church spokesperson says the church is a victim too.

In a statement church officials said, "We would like to apologize to all of the individuals that purchased tickets to see specific gospel music headliners at our venue…we fell prey to fraudulent behavior on behalf of the promoter. The patrons of the concert were also victims of this unethical behavior."
