Former Auburn golfer wins first pro event

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Former Auburn golfer Cydney Clanton picked up her first professional victory Sunday, surviving seven playoff holes to take the title at the Symetra Tour Four Winds Invitational at the Blackthorn Golf Course in South Bend, Ind.

Clanton, a native of Concord, N.C. and a 2011 Auburn graduate, carded rounds of 69-69-70—208 to finish the tournament in a three-way tie for the lead at 8-under-par.

She carded 15 birdies on the tournament, including five in the final round as she moved from a tie for second into a tie for the lead.

Tied with Marissa Steen and Marina Alex after 54 holes, the trio went to a sudden-death playoff that went on for seven holes.

The three golfers played the par-4 No. 18 over and over until only one was left. All three carded pars on the first three tries while Alex notched a bogey on the fourth attempt, leaving just Clanton and Steen.

Pars continued on the fifth and sixth attempts with Clanton stepping up for a birdie on the seventh to take the win. After Steen missed her putt, Clanton knew it was her opportunity as she lined up to drain her 10-fott birdie putt.

"I didn't think it was going to go in at first," said Clanton. "It came in the bottom lip and once it went I thought oh my gosh, thank you Lord for being there, it went in. There weren't very many thoughts going through my mind because I thought we were going to be going again. It was a very exciting moment."

The victory is the first of Clanton's professional career and her best finish since tying for third earlier this year at the VisitMesa.com Gateway Classic at Longbow Golf Club.
