Local canine wins national ad competition

Posted: Updated:

Brooks, a canine from Augusta, and his owner, Derek Underwood, have been named grand-prize winners of the IAMS Love Tails Contest!

WFXG first told you about the pair last week when they were announced as finalists for the competition. The grand-prize winning pair will now star in a national ad for IAMS, featuring their real-life "Love Tail."

Derek Underwood met his dog Brooks 2 years ago.

"Brooks is pretty relaxed but as soon as you bring out the ball, she gets pretty playful," Underwood said.

Underwood's family got her from a breeder in New York.

"She's a lot of fun. We really enjoy it," said George Hovan, Underwood's dad. "You take her out and she's always a hit wherever you go with her."

Brooks is no ordinary house pet, however. She's a therapy dog, who frequents hospitals and nursing homes in the CSRA and help relax patients and reduce high levels of stress.

"We've all been doing a lot of volunteer work as a family, and individually, and Brooks goes out with whoever has free time to take her out," Underwood said.

Now Brooks' story has a chance to become a national ad. Underwood made a video for IAMS', the pet food company, "Love Tails" contest and became a wildcard finalist.

"We thought we had a unique story to tell and to share with people," said Underwood. "Brooks makes people happy and feel good about themselves."

But Underwood and Brooks will need the help of the CSRA community to win.

People can log on to IAMS' page on Facebook between June 24-28 to view the video and like Brooks' love tail.
