GROVETOWN, GA (WFXG) -

Cherie Nuttall's 12-year-old son has childhood disintegrative disorder. A condition where children lose their motor, social and other skills they've developed.

"He's been self-harming himself, for over 8 years," Nuttall said. "If you have a severely disabled son, you can't do it forever. Eventually they get bigger and you cannot physically do it and having everybody say that you have to and say that you're not a good enough mother, which I've been told many times, is insulting."

Nuttall said when she lived in other states she had been able to get help for her son but a 2010 settlement agreement, which prohibited Georgia state hospitals from admitting patients with developmental disabilities, left her with no options for assistance.

Nuttall and dozens of others came to the Grovetown Senior Center to express their concerns with Congressman John Barrow and his staff.

He called it "Congress on the Corner" visiting Laurens, Emanuel and Columbia counties today.

"What a lot of folks don't realize is that members of congress learn what's going on in this country a lot more from folks back home than they can possibly learn from folks in Washington," Barrow said. "The only useful information that is exchanged in Washington is between members based on stuff they pick up back home."

Nuttall said she attended today not just for herself.

"A lot of other families are going through this too and I just want to help those other families," Nuttall said.
