UPDATE: Augusta offers discounts for furloughed DOD employees

Posted: Updated:

Some 75,000 Department of Defense employees will face up to 11 days of furlough beginning July 8, due to automatic budget cuts mandated by the sequester.

Fort Gordon, here in Augusta, is no exception.

More than 3000 civilian paychecks are to be cut.

"The furlough is tough and I really think there's no way to make that easier," said Peggy Seigler, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at the Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau. "I think that if we can show community support for the people that are going through that process, maybe that might make it a little easier."

The Augusta Convention and Visitor Bureau said it hopes to make it easier by offering discounts for those employees.

"The convention and visitors bureau was part of a larger meeting where the furlough was discussed and my boss said, you know what, I bet there's something even as small as this that we can do for those people to maybe make this summer not so hard," Seigler said.

The discounts range from a percentage off a tour of the Boyhood Home of Woodrow Wilson to a buy-one-get-from free ticket for a boat tour.

"The department of defense is a very important part of this community and it's kind of hand 'em a lemon and make lemonade," said Rebecca Rogers, marketing director for the Augusta National Heritage Area. "We'd love for people to come and see us and get to know the community. They maybe not have as much money but now they have a little bit more time."

The offers are valid from July 1 to September 30th and will apply to up to 3 family members or guests.

In response to the Federal budget sequestration furloughs of Department of Defense (DOD) employees at Fort Gordon, the Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB), in conjunction with local tourism partners, has developed a plan to offer special discounts to DOD employees.

Because many employees will now have additional free time, but limited disposable income, the Augusta CVB is securing special discount offers from several local events, attractions and hotels. In addition to the discount program, the Augusta CVB has compiled a calendar of free events happening during the furlough period.

"Augusta offers a wealth of attractions and events for the local community to enjoy," said Augusta CVB President and CEO Barry White. "We recognize the valuable impact that Fort Gordon has on our community, and we hope the employees and their families will take advantage of these many opportunities."

The offers will be valid from July 1-September 30, 2013 and will apply to the employee and up to 3 family members/guests, unless otherwise noted. Employees will be required to present their DOD identification to receive the discount. Some of the available discounts include:

Augusta Canal Discovery Center - Buy any one-hour Petersburg Boat tour ticket and get one free ($12.50 value).

Boyhood Home of President Woodrow Wilson - $1 off regular admission (25% savings).

Clarion Suites Hotel - $49+tax for a double or king suite. Rate includes hot breakfast buffet, manager's reception with two complimentary drinks, free wireless internet and outdoor pool. Valid July 1-September 1 only.
