MARTINEZ, GA (WFXG) -

A records researcher who was checking to see who is responsible to pay for repairing a damaged road in Martinez was arrested after documents went missing.

Vanessa Waldron is charged with stealing public documents and making a false statement.

She works for Lawyers Abstract Company, the group that is working to find out who owns Lakestone Court for the Barrington Homeowners Association.

The road was badly damaged a few weeks ago after heavy rains flooded the area.

Waldron was arrested when the Columbia County Clerk of Court officials discovered that two pages used to locate the original property documents for the road were gone.

Columbia County Captain Steve Morris says the original records weren't taken.

We went to Waldron's home to get her side of the story but she didn't come to the door.

Trisha Wells is a Barrington homeowner and she said, "It is shocking, it's disappointing that we're even getting to this point that people are getting arrested. I just hope that everyone can work together in a fair way to try to resolve the problem for everyone that's affected."

The county is fixing the road which means filling in the hole that is now 18 feet deep and 30 feet wide.

Attorneys are still trying to figure out who will pay for the repairs.
