18-year-old from Holyoke drowns in Connecticut River

Holyoke police said 18-year-old Jonathan Ramos, of Holyoke, died after crews pulled his body from the Connecticut River Monday night.

At 7:46 Ramos reportedly fell into the river from "High Rock," a cliff about 25 feet above the water on the Holyoke side.

Witnesses said Ramos did not resurface.

After hours of searching with a police helicopter and several boats, crews pulled Ramos' body from the river at about 9:20 p.m. and took him to Holyoke Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

"High Rock" is located behind Cleveland Street in Holyoke and is a popular spot for kids to go cliff diving.

Police think Ramos didn't jump into the water but fell in. He was with a group of people when he went into the water.

Police also described the water as "dangerous" and "treacherous." They say the river was high and rough due to recent storms.
