Man arrested for carjacking woman downtown

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

A man is in custody for allegedly carjacking a woman in Downtown Augusta.

Levon Smiley, 29, is in Richmond County Jail. He's charged with hijacking a motor vehicle and battery.

Early Friday morning, around 2:44am, the Richmond County Sheriff's Office responded to the 1100 block of Broad Street. They found Vinika Walcott, who told deputies she was trying to get into her 2006 Nissan Armada when she was a approached by the suspect. Walcot alleges she was assaulted, and the suspect stole her vehicle.

Around 3:30am, the suspect was identified by investigators as Levon Smiley. At 5:48am, deputies were able to take Smiley into custody.

Walcott's vehicle was recovered on the 1700 block of Broad Street.
