The City of Montgomery is planning to merge two of its departments in an effort to save money. The departments in question are the Food Services Department and the Parks and Recreation Department.
Some layoffs are expected, according to city officials.
The merger is expected to save the city some $300,000 for fiscal year 2013. Officials say instead of losing money on food services next
year, they will budget approx $700,000 in hopes of breaking even. That would mean a net savings
of $500,000. Food services was budgeted at $2 million and operated as a half-million loss.
Back on June 4th, the Zoo Concessions which City Food Services handled, was contracted to Southern Food Services Incorporated out of Birmingham. They have now taken over operations
City Food Services employed 15 people and the city says it will retain five of those employees. The five who will be retained remained employed based on seniority. They will now report to Scott Miller at Parks and Recreation.
Those employees will now work concessions at Lagoon Park, Fain Park, and Paterson Field under the direction of the Parks and Recreation Dept.
Ten other employees were laid off by the city but authorities say those workers could retire from the city - if vested - or apply for work with Southern Food Services. Each of those affected was given a letter explaining the changes.
In addition, the city is also giving up concessions at Cramton Bowl. Bids will be going out on that contract at a later date.
The city also will no longer provide food services at Garrett Coliseum.
Officials say the Food Services Department had not been self-sustaining for some time and efforts over the years were made to try to change that. The city decided to make the merger in what it called the best option.
