SHORTER, AL (WSFA) -

Authorities say Interstate 85 has reopened nearly 8 hours after a fatal crash involving three commercial vehicles and a passenger vehicle that occurred early Wednesday morning.

Traffic remained heavily delayed for most of the day with some commuters reporting wait times in the hours. Traffic was rerouted at the Shorter exit, Exit 22 to U.S. 80. until the roadway was cleared.

The collision happened in a construction zone in the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 near Shorter in Macon County (mile marker 19) at approximately 9:25 a.m.

Involved vehicles include an 18-wheeler carrying bricks and another transporting milk. The third commercial vehicle's contents were not known. The passenger vehicle was a 2012 Toyota Sienna.

Killed in the crash was Steven Fox, 31, of Madison, Ga. Fox's 2004 Freightliner (milk truck) struck the rear of a 2007 Peterbilt (brick truck). The brick truck then lurched forward striking the van which in turn slammed into a 2003 Freightliner.

Three people, unidentified at this time, were transported to area hospitals via helicopter or ambulance with injuries. Their conditions were not immediately known.

The crash report shows that Fox was distracted in some manner in the moments before the collision, though it cannot determine the cause of the distration. Fox didn't begin applying brakes until just 25 feet from the point of collision.
