ELMORE CO., AL (WSFA) -

Residents near the Tallassee City line in Elmore County have noticed a few small animals going missing recently. Specifically - a calf and a small dog. Now authorities say the culprit in those disappearances is dead.

WSFA 12 News first told you about an alligator spotted on Rifle Range Road, just south of Taylor Road by the Tumkeehatchee Creek on Friday.

Since that day, Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin says his deputies have been sent to at least four other calls in the area dealing with that same gator.

Residents have reported multiple sightings of the animal, and Sheriff Franklin says the disappearances of a calf and a small dog have been linked to the large reptile.

Sheriff Franklin says deputies received another call regarding the gator on the 14000 block of Rifle Range Road between Rock Springs Road and Taylor Road on Monday night. Deputies responded to the area and contacted the Alabama Department of Conservation.

Due to the disappearances of the calf and dog, the alligator was deemed a "nuisance." Sheriff Franklin says federal law allows law enforcement to destroy an animal in an instance such as this.

The deputy called to the scene "humanely" shot the alligator, killing it. Since there was no Department of Conservation tag involved in this case, and because it is outside of alligator hunting season, the gator's remains cannot be used in any way. Sheriff Franklin says his deputies were put to work digging a hole in which to bury the reptile.

This alligator measured exactly 11 feet long and was estimated to weigh between 500 and 600 pounds.

"We've dealt with this kind of situation before," said Sheriff Franklin. "Most recently near downtown Wetumpka. But that wasn't this same gator. Very few have to end this way."
