Neighbors fear more explosives could be buried after man finds TNT

EDGEFIELD COUNTY, SC (WFXG) -

An Edgefield man finds explosives buried in his yard. Now neighbors are wondering why they were there in the first place and could there be more buried?

"Should I go check my backyard?" said Rose Bendickson.

Bendickson is still in shock after learning her neighbor Benny Dickson found explosives buried in his yard.

"My rake hit something metal so I took my shovel and dug it up and it was an old ammunition box," said Dickson.

When searching for a leaky pipe, Dickson found a even bigger problem, a box full of TNT.

He believes they had been there for nearly two decades and put there by someone who served in the military and being a former military man himself he said, it's not unusual to bury things like TNT.

"Yeah it would be something I would do if I did something like that," said Dickson. "I would get it away from the house."

Dickson said before his house was built, the man that owned his property and the one next door was a highly ranked military official.

Now neighbors are thinking twice before they make any changes to their property.

"Now if we have anything else done further, we would have to tell people there have been explosives found a couple of doors over," said Bendickson.

The Richmond County Bomb Squad and Edgefield County investigators searched the rest of his property but did not find any more explosives.
