Auburn names Paul Register as new Chief of Police

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

After the announcement of Chief Tommy Dawson's retirement from the Auburn Police force last week, Auburn city officials have officially appointed Paul Register as the new Chief of Police.

"Chief Dawson and I worked together for a very long time and I don't really expect anything to change. We worked together on a lot of things. Our philosophies and goals are the same, so I don't think the Auburn citizens will see much of a difference," says Register.

Register has been with the Auburn Police Division for 25 years and has served as Assistant Chief since 2010.

He has been Acting Chief of Police since Dawson began a medical leave in March.

Register says his new appointment is bittersweet, and is thankful for knowledge he has gained from working with Dawson.

"I think the experience... he gave me a lot of responsibilities that I think have prepared me for this position," explains Register.

"Chief Register was only applicant. The first thing I told him when were offering the job, after we had an interview, was that he wasn't getting it by default," explains Auburn City Manger, Charles Duggan, " If we didn't have extreme confidence in him we'd be looking elsewhere and he appreciated the confidence we placed in him."

Register has served every position at the department over the years from patrol to detective to narcotics.

He says these experiences have helped get to where he is today and also, gain a lot of patience.

"I think over the years, the things I've dealt with and the things that I've been through will hopefully prepare me for what come up and I have a good support network, I have a great group here," says Register.

Register's new title will become effective July 1, and city officials couldn't be happier with their decision.

"When it comes to experience and knowledge that's there and then working closely with him you find out what a quality individual he is and also his manner with people," says Duggan.
