CCSO: Body in Oak Creek Canyon was wanted man

FLAGSTAFF, AZ (CBS5) -

The body of a man found in Oak Creek Canyon nearly two weeks ago has been identified as a resident of Washington State who had a federal warrant out for his arrest.

The body of Stephen Buck, 47, was found by a hiker and his companion the afternoon of May 27, said Gerald Blair of the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.

Blair was found face down behind some trees near a creek and was fully clothed, Blair said. He also said there no signs of injuries or trauma associated with foul play. However, several types of controlled substances or narcotics were found near his body, Blair said.

A key found in a pocket of Buck's clothing was matched to a U-Haul van near State Route 89A. The van was reported stolen by U-Haul.

Deputies learned the active U.S. Marshal warrant was initiated by the California Department of Drug Enforcement.

No cause of death had been determined, but detectives said a drug overdose was a possibility.

Blair said the investigation was continuing.
