County crews brace for tropical storm

Posted: Updated:

Columbia and Richmond County emergency crews are bracing for the effects of Tropical Storm Andrea. Heavy rain earlier this week has already created problems and more rain and flooding is expected in the next 24 hours.

"Everybody is on standby, we maintain a constant state of readiness," said Director Pam Tucker, Columbia County Emergency & Operations Division.

Even though the Augusta area is only under a flood watch, Columbia County emergency management crews are ready for whatever the tropical storm may bring.

"I think we are going to be ok because as long as we don't get all that rain at one time like we did on Sunday night," said Tucker.

Heavy rain Sunday night brought more than five inches of rain to Columbia County causing some areas to have major flooding.

"If you have to drive tonight or tomorrow when some of these bands are coming through drive slower," said Tucker.

Even roadways in Richmond County were under water earlier this week. Chief Wayne Taylor is keeping an eye out on how this storm could affect our area.

"If we see where there is a lot of flooding taking place, we have barricades that we can put in place to prevent traffic from flowing through there," said Chief Taylor.

He recommends drivers avoid roads where the curb is not visible and areas that are notorious for flooding.

"One of those areas is down around University Hospital and R.A. Dent," said Chief Taylor.

Chief Taylor said the area around Laney Walker Boulevard is one of the areas crews are monitoring. It has seen flooding issues in the past and with all the expected rain, crews are taking extra precaution.

"During a heavy rain event then we will have our Battalion Chiefs go out and survey those areas and keep us up to date on what kind of impact is taking place there," said Chief Taylor.

Both Richmond and Columbia Counties are preparing for the worst even though conditions aren't expected to be as bad in the Augusta area as they are on the coast.
