Troopers stop traffic to save baby ducks trapped on highway

MAUMEE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

The tragic story of a mother duck hit by a car in Maumee has a happy ending now thanks to two Ohio State Troopers.

Sergeant Chad Durfey with the Ohio State Highway Patrol says he and Trooper Ladonna Klocinski were traveling west on U.S. 24 near Fallen Timbers mall just after 10 a.m. Wednesday when they noticed traffic was stopped.

Drivers were slowing down and stopping to avoid hitting a group of ducklings. The ducklings' mother had been hit and killed by a car.

That's when the two troopers took over. They stopped traffic and corralled the baby ducks into their vehicle.

"It took us some time to get them all gathered up, but we got them," said Sergeant Durfey.

Trooper Klocinski then took the ducklings to Nature's Nursery, which cares for wild animals in need of help.

Sergeant Durfey says he has helped injured deer many times in his career, but this is the first time dealing with ducks.

We contacted Nature's Nursery to check on the ducklings and they are doing well! They are wood ducks and they will be put into rehabilitation until they are about 6-8 weeks old. Once they reach that age they will be released into the wild.
