The suspect accused of fatally shooting a man in the Augusta Estates Mobile Home Park turned himself into authorities Friday afternoon.

Investigators say Darrian Williams shot and killed Larry Elam after they were arguing early Thursday morning. Elam was shot in the neck, then later died in the hospital. Elam's 5-year-old child was also injured by broken glass during the incident.

Williams is being charged with one count of murder, one count of possession of firearm during the commission of a crime, one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and two counts of cruelty to children in the third degree.

Residents in this quiet mobile home park got a sudden wake-up call after one of their neighbors was shot and killed early Thursday morning.

"Last night like I thought that they were just going past the trailer park, but when I found out this morning that they were in the trailer park," said Mercille Jenkins, a resident in the Augusta Estates Mobile Home Park. "It sounded like five police and three ambulances."

Richmond County investigators said Larry Elam, 31, was gunned down by a suspect they identified as Darrian Williams. Witnesses say Elam and Williams were arguing at his Augusta Estates home. That's when Williams pulled out a gun and shot Elam in the neck. Elam's 5-year-old son was injured by broken glass. Williams drove away with two other suspects, as Elam and his son were rushed to the hospital where he later died. The child is still recovering.

"I feel so sorry for their family, and the guy who lost his life," Jenkins said. "I hope they find out who did it."

"It makes me feel slightly unsafe," said Jimmy Thompson, another resident in the Augusta Estates. "It happens everywhere you go. You'll never be able to be safe from it."

This fatal shooting comes less than 24 hours after the Sheriff's Office met with city leaders and community members discussing how to reduce crime in Richmond County neighborhoods.

In a public forum, Sheriff Richard Roundtree asked the community to be the eyes and ears of their neighborhoods and report crimes whenever they happen; a responsibility not everyone is willing to accept.

"A lot of people, they don't want to rub certain people the wrong way," Thompson said. "And even if it's not that, they just want to keep to themselves and they don't want to get into anyone else's business because it's better to stay in your own little square."

And whether community policing is something other neighbors will embrace, the sheriff's office credits a 30 percent decrease in crime this year to the public's help.
