Shoppers question new Wal-Mart location

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Construction is underway for a new Wal-Mart Supercenter along Wrightsboro Road; a project that is bringing new businesses and jobs but has some people questioning the location.

"I'd rather have it downtown," said Margarie Burley

Zoning Administrator Robert Austin showed FOX54 the proposed site plan for the supercenter that he has been working on over the last six weeks.

"Wal-Mart was such a complex plan that it was under review for a year," said Austin.

It is now in the building phase, the zoning administrator said everything currently in the shopping center at Wrightsboro and North Leg Road will be demolished and replaced with more than 147,000 square feet of the new supercenter.

"It's a big increase to our tax base," said Austin.

The new store is expected to bring nearly 200 jobs to the area.

"You know everything has been moving out towards Martinez and Evans, so I'm sure this will definitely help this area," said Greg Walker.

Walker is the manager of Baldinos Giant Subs who welcomes the new neighbor but did not welcome their business offer.

"They wanted to buy us up but we decided to stay because we just saw it as a positive. You know it can only help our business in the long run," said walker.

Some said bringing this type of business is too similar to those already in the area.

"You have Food Lions, Bi lo, and Kroger. I would have liked for it to go downtown where people really need it," said Barley.

The doors of the new Wal-Mart are expected to open for shoppers in the spring of 2014.
