Teen dies after jumping in Lake Olmstead

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) - Richmond County deputies say the body of a man found at Lake Olmstead has been identified as Calvin Cunningham, 19.

Around 4:45 Sunday afternoon, a deputy, who is also a relative of the Cunningham, spotted him on the 2400 block of Yorkshire Drive and knew he had been reported missing.

According to the Richmond County Sheriff's Office, the deputy attempted to make contact with Cunningham, but he fled.

That's when officers say Cunningham jumped into the Augusta Canal. He then went under the water and never came back up, according to the police.

EMS and fire responded to the scene, and the Dive Team was later called to the scene after the teen did not surface for several minutes.

The Dive Team began a search for Cunningham and eventually found his body shortly after 7:00 tonight, according to deputies.

Cunningham's mother had reported him missing last Wednesday, but deputies say he was removed from Georgia Crime Information Center after he was spotted the next day.

The Richmond County coroner says Cunningham's body will be taken to the GBI Crime Lab in Atlanta for an autopsy on Tuesday.

He says the cause of death is still pending.
