BARDSTOWN, KY (FOX19) -

A Kentucky police officer and Glen Este High School graduate was found shot and killed early Saturday morning on an exit ramp.

Jason Ellis, 33, was an officer with the Bardstown Police Department. According to authorities, a woman reported a fatal car accident on a Bluegrass Parkway exit ramp involving a police officer, just before 3 a.m.

Upon arrival, a trooper discovered Ellis' body and determined he had been shot, instead of the original report of a crash.

Police say Ellis did not have any radio communications with dispatch in the minutes before his death. He worked second shift and was in uniform in a marked police car on his way home from work when the incident occurred.

No suspects have been named.

Ellis was a Batavia native and graduated from Glen Este High School in 1998.

On Saturday, West Clermont Local Schools released a statement regarding his time at Glen Este:

While at Glen Este High School, Jason was a star baseball player for the Trojans before moving on to set school records at Cumberland College. According to his high school coach John Hatfield, Jason was named 1st team all city in 1998 and Player of the Year in the then Queen City Conference.

Hatfield shared, "Jason Ellis was a great kid and a great man".

According to Hatfield, Ellis went on to play baseball for at the single A level within the Cincinnati Reds organization.

He was a seven-year veteran of the Bardstown Police Department, and was the department's only K-9 officer. Bardstown is located about 40 miles southeast of Louisville.

He leaves behind a wife and two young sons.
