Jack Holt and Ashley Thompson are waiting to be extradited from Aiken to the Columbia County Detention Center.
Sunday morning, Neighbors in Grovetown said they saw Holt walk into an open garage to steal a leaf blower! He threw it in the back of his truck and sped off.
"That's crazy! I mean, I guess he took his chances but that's a lot to go to jail for," said Mariah Bohanann, a Columbia County resident.
It wasn't long before Columbia County deputies spotted Holt's truck and tried to pull him over, but then, he took off, leading them on a high speed chase along Interstate 20.
"We pursued Holt to Martintown Road, and he pulled over, and it was at that time he and the female passenger were arrested without incident," said Capt. Steve Morris with the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.
Near a gas station off Exit 1 of I-20 is where investigators said Holt all of a sudden stopped. He and Thompson surrendered. But then deputies saw more passengers in the back seat.
"There was a 3-year-old and a 1-year-old in the vehicle at the time," Capt. Morris said.
Investigators say the children were released to a family member.
Neighbors said it's hard to believe Holt did all this for a piece of lawn equipment, but it's not his first time. Holt has had warrants out for his arrest since January. Deputies said earlier this year he walked into an open garage stealing two leaf blowers valued at $1,000.
We spoke with the owner, too shy to go on camera, who said his backpack leaf blower was worth $500. He says he's waiting for it to be returned, and says he'll be more careful when leaving his garage open.
